Grant Description

Skin stem cells are crucial for wound healing and play a key role in skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. These stem cells are exposed to various types of light radiation, including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light. Different types of differentiating skin stem cells express distinct light sensors, enabling them to process various types of light differently. This can result in variations in skin stem cell differentiation and cell signaling. This project investigates how specific light-sensing proteins in these cells regulate pro-inflammatory cytokine expression. These cytokines are critical for skin regeneration, differentiation, and the development of conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. If successful, the team will identify how light sensing in specific types of skin stem cells contributes to the progression of skin disorders.
