Modulating the Local Microenvironment of Nerve Regeneration with Cellular Components
Grant Project Details:
Grant Description
Peripheral nerve injuries are associated with high-energy trauma and result in substantial numbers of injuries annually. Reconstruction often requires large quantities of nerve grafts taken from the injured patient, however, there are very few sensory nerves available, demonstrating a clear need for an alternative treatment option. One promising approach involves the use of acellular nerve allografts (ANAs). However, several challenges remain in optimizing ANAs for clinical use. This research team is employing a three-pronged strategy to enhance the development and preparation of ANAs. They will explore various methods to produce optimal ANAs and thoroughly evaluate different aspects of graft functionality. The ultimate goal is to advance these novel ANAs to human clinical trials.
