Understanding the interaction of stem cells and scaffolds with host tissue: implications of regenerative medicine
Grant Project Details:
Stem cells have the potential to rebuild damaged tissues. Since most tissues are three dimensional, a molecular "scaffold" is often used to place the cells within a normal tissue structure. This research project seeks to better understand how the host environment interacts with transplanted stem cells and if delivering a supportive "biomatrix" to deliver certain chemicals can change the host environment to help transplanted stem cells survive and function. In summary, results from these studies will be critical to better understand the interaction between stem cells and host tissue, reaching all areas of regenerative medicine.
